Legislative Updates

1 Feb 2017

AFSA 1075 Members,

Below is an email from our Div 4 Legislative Trustee. In it he outlines 4 items that we can work on as a chapter:

1. Understanding the impact of our Legislative aims 2. Gathering input/data on items that can be added to our Legislative Platform 3. Educating members/non-members about our Legislative Platform 4. Partnering with other organizations

Other topics of addressed were the preparation for Legislative Awareness Week and the survey in Voter Voice. Like I stated in our chapter newsletter for the Legislative team, L.A.W. is our Super Bowl. I’ll need help with organizing an event(s) for JBSA-Randolph, so please contact me if you’d like to join the team. If you’ve not already done so go online and take the survey in Voter Voice. The goal is to better understand how people value AFSA. It’s only 14 questions long and shouldn’t take more than 20 min of your time.

Attached is a Legislative Update I recently received from Div 6. This update focused on four issues;

1. An article from Military Times discussing Congress’s look into how much shoppers are saving at commissaries versus civilian grocery stores.

2. An article from Military Times noting key officials in Congress the AFSA Legislative team regularly visits.

3. An article form the Virginia Pilot reporting that VA Secretary Nominee, David Shulkin, is opposed to radical changes to the agency 4. Legislation of Interest – H.R. 758, by Rep. Bradley Scott Schneider, D-Ill., would authorize veterans who are entitled to educational assistance under the Post-9/11 Educational Assistance Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs to use such entitlement to participate in a career transition internship program for veterans.

Thank you for your time.
